Obituary of Dorothy Yashinsky

Dorothy Petras Yashinsky, 89, of Raritan, died on July 14, 2018 peacefully at her daughter's home in Maryland. She was born in Raritan in 1929 to her dear parents, Juliana (Verbicki) and Stephen Petras and attended St. Joseph's School and Somerville High School. Life for Dot was fun on Codington Street with her big brothers Peter and Stephen and big sister Pauline and many cousins. She enjoyed singing in the choir as a young girl and as an adult. After high school, she was one of the first groups of young women to work on computers, as a keypunch operator at Prudential Insurance Company in Newark. She especially enjoyed commuting on the Jersey Central Line. Dorothy married the late Zigmund "Zig" Yashinsky, of Throop, Pa, in 1954, and together they raised three children. She later worked as a clerk in the Somerset County Sheriff's office and at the Raritan Savings Bank. Both enjoyed hearing about thier children's adventures, as all three served in the military. Especially exciting was spending lots of great times watching, teaching and playing with their five grandsons before they entered school. She was a communicant at the Church of St. Joseph, Raritan and later at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Upper Marlboro, MD. Through the years, church services and activities were an important part of her life. Dot was a member and president of the St. Joseph Altar and Rosary Society, a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Mary's Church in MD, and a longtime member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will truly be missed by all who knew her. Dot is survived by her loving children: daughter, Lorraine and her husband, Don, sons, Joseph and his wife, Betty, and Peter and his wife, Caroline; and five cherished grandsons, Stephen (Fiancée, Victoria), Scott, Brian, Daniel and Thomas. A viewing will be held on Friday, July 20, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Bongiovi Funeral Home, 416 Bell Avenue, Raritan, NJ (908) 725-1887. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, July 21 at 9:30am at the Church of Saint Joseph, 16 East Somerset Street, Raritan, NJ. Burial to follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bridgewater.
