Obituary of Bernard Gregory Olszyk

Bernard Gregory Olszyk, known affectionately as Greg, passed away on May 25th, 2023, at the age of 74. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Bernie’s life was marked by unwavering faith, dedication to his family, and a commitment to helping others.

Bernie was born on May 28, 1948, to Bernard J. Olszyk and Margaret DeStefano Olszyk, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his brother Eugene Olszyk. Throughout his life, Bernie exemplified the values instilled in him by his parents, values that shaped him into a compassionate and caring individual.

In 1967, he married the love of his life, Nancy Spera Olszyk, and their bond endured for an incredible 56 years. Together, they shared a journey filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Nancy was Bernie’s rock, his partner in life, and their devotion to one another was a testament to the enduring power of love.

Bernie and Nancy were blessed with two children, Greg Olszyk, who is married to Karen, and Heather King, who is married to Paul. As a father, he provided unwavering support and guidance to his children, instilling in them the same values he held dear. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent with his family.

Family was of utmost importance to him, and his role as a grandfather brought him immeasurable joy. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Alyssa, Gregory N., Alex, Colin, and Phoebe. Bernie’s love and wisdom were a constant source of inspiration in their lives, and his memory will forever live on in their hearts.

In addition to his grandchildren, Bernie was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Kayden, MacKenzie, and Rowan. He adored them dearly and cherished the opportunity to watch them grow. His legacy will continue through these young lives, as his teachings and values are passed down through the generations.

Professionally, Bernie dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to Johns Manville, where he worked in various locations, including New Jersey, Denver, and Texas. His commitment and expertise were widely recognized, and he made lasting contributions to the company throughout his tenure.

Upon retiring, Bernie and Nancy relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia, where they embraced a new chapter of their lives. His warm and friendly nature quickly endeared him to the community, and he formed countless meaningful friendships both in the neighborhood and on the golf course. Bernie had a knack for fostering lifelong connections wherever he went, and his genuine kindness and infectious spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Bernie’s faith was the bedrock of his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and is also a Discalced Carmelite. He found solace and strength in his religious convictions, often visiting the Carmelite Monastery in New Jersey to seek peace, pray, and reflect. Bernie’s spirituality guided his actions, and he selflessly dedicated his time to helping those in need. His unwavering generosity touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and service.

Bernard Gregory Olszyk, or Greg as he was affectionately known, will be deeply missed by his loving family, cherished friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His memory will be forever treasured, and his legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire others to live with compassion and purpose.

A mass will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, on June 16th at 11:00am, in Raritan, NJ followed by a burial at St. Bernard cemetery, in Bridgewater, NJ. To celebrate his life, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Medical Center.
